Ohio City

This neighborhood was once a separate city and a fierce rival of Cleveland. Located on the western side of the Cuyahoga River, Ohio City was incorporated on July 3, 1836, two days before Cleveland was. The two towns fought vigorously for commercial trade, especially from the Ohio Canal, but eventually merged in 1854. The recent history of this cosmopolitan neighborhood is marked by rebirth and revitalization of both residential and commercial districts. Key historical sites include St. Ignatius High School, the Carnegie Branch of the Cleveland Public Library, and the West Side Market. Events include the Annual Historic House Tour in spring and an outdoor Open Air Market at Market Square in summer.
